The micro-blogging website Twitter says that it has created a darkweb version of its service that can be used by Russians despite the regular version of the service being restricted in the country because of the Ukraine Crisis.

This new service from twitter will be available through a special “onion” URL on the darkweb that is accessible through the Tor browser in Russia and Ukraine.

The announcement of the new feature was made by a software engineer Alec Muffett who works for Twitter. Alec Muffett is a Software engineer and internet security expert , who has worked with other companies to set up onion sites.

“This is possibly the most important and long-awaited tweet that I’ve ever composed.

“On behalf of @Twitter, I am delighted to announce their new @TorProject onion service,” said Alec.

Facebook and other social media websites and even the BBC all have versions that are accessible on Tor.

Last week, officials from Russia announced that they blocked access to Facebook after the platforms placing restrictions on state-owned Russian media. Twitter, BBC, the US government-funded Voice of America and Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, German broadcaster Deutsche Welle and Latvia-based website Meduza were also blocked.
